Chapter 17

“I think that’s a bad idea,” Lauren said.

“I’ll be there with him. I’ll make sure nothing happens.”

“If trouble starts, what can you do?”

“I can make sure trouble doesn’t start.” I reached across the swing and rested my hand on her arm. “Lauren, he’s going off to college in a few months. You can’t protect him forever.”

Her face softened. “I know.”

“We just want to have a night out together. Have a little fun.”

She thought for a moment. “You’ll keep your eye on him?”

“I promise.”

She sighed. “Ok. But if trouble starts, you get him out of there. I don’t need any more visits from the sheriff.”

I smiled. “Thanks.”

She returned my smile and placed her hand over mine. “It’s hard letting go. You’ll see when you’re a mom.”

“I hope I’m as good a mom as you. You’ve raised a special son.”

Her smile widened. I could see she wanted to ask, but couldn’t find the words.

“Not yet,” I said. “We’ve been entertaining ourselves in other ways. I want it to be special when it happens.”

“If you need time alone, let me know.”

“Thanks, I will. Does my mom know?”

She glanced quickly at me. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean.”

She was silent, and I looked at her in surprise.

“She does, doesn’t she?”

“Yes.”

“Holy shit. And she’s ok with it?”

“Watch your language. And yes, she is. As a matter of fact...”

“What?”

“It was her idea.”

I stared at her in stunned amazement. “You’re joking.”

“Not at all. When we talked about our families, I told her about Jamie being alone here, and she told me about you dating a loser.”

“Billy?”

“Yes. Your parents weren’t a fan. So we got to talking, and she said she wished we lived near each other, so you and Jamie could be friends. I told her that Jamie needed a girl like you around, who could show him what is what. That’s when she came up with the idea of getting you two together.”

I wondered if I was dreaming. “My mom brought me here to get laid?”

“No, your mom brought you here to meet a wonderful boy. Whether you get laid or not is your choice.”

I smiled. “And nature taking its course, right?”

“That too. Get two healthy teens together, and they tend to figure it out for themselves.”

“But what if I was still dating Billy?”

“Your mom thought of that too.”

“What do you mean?”

“She had your father pulls some strings with some old friends. The Alaskan job offer to Billy wasn’t random.”

Once again, I gaped at her. “They broke us up on purpose?”

“Did you really have a future with him?”

“I thought I did.”

“Do you now?”

“No.”

“Then it was for the best, right?”

“I guess.” I needed time to think over this news. I stood. “I’m going to bed.”

“Goodnight, Kristen. Have fun.”

I stared at her. “We’re not fooling you with our midnight visits, are we?”

She smiled. “As I told you, I’m not a stupid woman. Combine that with an old house that creaks when anyone moves, and no, you’re not fooling me.”

I shook my head. “You are amazing, just like your son.
